From the Desk of
the President...
As your Maryland State Council ENA
President for 2008, I am honored that you provided me with this
opportunity.
I have been asked frequently; What are
my goals for this organization? My answer is “YOU”.
I want to hear from you.
I want to know what you expect from me and this organization.
I want you to get excited about ENA and what it represents.
While those are my three personal goals,
I would like to focus on the last one. We have many valuable members
in our state but very few who are actively involved in our
professional organization. I realize that ability to become
personally active is limited as we have personal and professional
responsibilities but I would like to encourage you to give it some
thought.
The ENA mission statement is ENA is a
professional member organization recognized internationally for
promoting excellence in emergency nursing through leadership,
research, education and advocacy. Now, look inwardly at yourself.
Which is your area of strength? My personal areas are education and
advocacy. Learning is rewarding and serves to promote my profession
through advancing my practice or helping others to advance theirs to
provide improved patient care.
ENA has an objective to serve as an
advocate for the public regarding emergency care. While we serve as
advocates for the public, I think we must serve as advocates for
ourselves – Emergency Nurses. We must find ways to support our
colleagues and speak up when issues impact our profession. These
issues may be related to practice, operations or professionalism. It
is my role to represent emergency nursing, but without your input, I
can not do that effectively.
As your 2008 state officers (Linda
Arapian – President – Elect), Caroline Doyle – Secretary and Sandy
Waak – Treasurer) attended the State Leaders meeting in Chicago, we
were discussing our goals of increasing contact and interaction with
the membership. As we talked, Caroline came up with the idea of a
renaissance.
Renaissance is defined as a rebirth or
revival. So, with that in mind, the year 2008 will hopefully be a
renaissance for the Emergency Nurses Association in Maryland as we
look to our members (new, old, student, or associate) for a rebirth
of excitement, commitment, and professionalism.
Now, think about this: What can we do
together?
Let me know. I can be reached by email
at
mvanhoy@shorehealth.org. I am waiting to hear from
you.
Mary Alice Vanhoy, RN, MSN, CEN NREMT-P
President
