From the Desk of
the President...
As we now settle
into the new year, it is time to look where we are going. There are
many exciting things on the horizon for MD ENA.
First, I
hope everyone is making plans to attend ENA By The Bay.
There are many exciting and timely topics planned. ENA By
The Bay will be held (as many of you requested) in Ocean
City at the Clarion on April 24th & 25th. We have the
pleasure of featuring some national speakers on topics of Sepsis,
Burn Management, Commotio Cordis and others. Mark you calendars and
hold those days so you can join us in making this the best
conference to date.
Speaking of
holding dates, did you know that the National ENA's General and
Scientific Assembly are headed to Baltimore in 2009? Put your
request in early for October 8-10, 2009 for Scientific
Assembly at the Baltimore Convention Center. We want to have a
great turnout. If you have never had the opportunity to attend a
National ENA Conference – this is the time to go. Network and make
new friends and you will be surprised to discover that your
challenges are the same as others around the country and the world.
If you want to
start preparing for 2009 in Baltimore, consider attending the 2008
conference in Minneapolis on September 25-27. Go the ENA website at
www.ena.org for more information.
As you
cruise the ENA website, I would like to share with you a few very
important documents and their locations. I hope that every has had
the opportunity to read through the PROCEDURAL SEDATION
CONSENSUS STATEMENT (http://www.ena.org/about/position/PDFs/02-11-08ProceduralSedationConsensus.pdf)
This document
released on 2/11/08 addresses the principles for procedural sedation
in the emergency care setting and the goals of providing safe,
patient centered care. This document was a collaborative effort of
many organizations that support the use of procedural sedation when
preformed by “appropriate trained, credentialed and supported
emergency nurses and physicians”. I encourage you to read this
document carefully as it is a topic which is being addressed and
reviewed by the Maryland Board of Nursing.
In addition to
the new consensus statement, ENA has a position statement:
Procedural Sedation and Analgesia in the Emergency Department
(2005). This and other position statements are located at
http://www.ena.org/about/position.
Please take
the time to review these two documents by your
professional organization. See what Emergency Nursing
has to say. Remember it is up to us to define standard of care.
Please feel free
to contact me at any time. I can be reached by email at
