From the Desk of
the President...
September 2007
Dear Nurses,
It has been a busy summer, filled with heat waves and draught
conditions. I hope the fall will bring some relief! It is back to
school time for those of us with children and back to our busy
schedules.
I do hope that you will have a chance to fit the annual conference
in Salt Lake City, UT in to your schedule, this September. I always
feel refreshed, fully re-charged and armed with new knowledge to
better serve my patients in the Emergency Department after
attending. The networking opportunities are amazing. Each time I
attend one of these conferences I meet someone who makes my
professional life better for the following year! Besides the
continuing education, networking and seeing all the new products,
the conference is a great time to have some fun! Nurses need to take
time to relax and have fun too!
Prior to the annual convention, the General Assembly is held. This
is the national ENA business meeting during which the entire
national ENA delegation comes together to discuss
- the issues of ED nurses
- how to address ED issues currently and in the years to come
- ENA Bylaw changes
- national ENA committee reports
- and many more items, issues and ideas.
It is exciting to see how one person's idea ripples through the
crowd and creates great changes in our association. Although our
association has grown over 30,000 members, it is still amazing to me
how one voice has the power to make a difference. The process is
thrilling to be a part of and incredible to watch. We have some
brand new delegates joining your Maryland delegation from our local
chapters. Maybe next year, you will be joining us.
It is hard not to comment on world
events when they are hitting so close to home.
It is rare now not to know someone who is serving our country in
Iraq or who has been personally affected by the war. Maryland ENA
selected Major Kevin White for our nomination for the Behind the
Scene Award. Although he was not selected as the national winner, he
is a winner in our hearts. He has donated thousands of dollars worth
of movies, offices supplies, fax and copy services and his business
expertise to our association. Kevin was called to active duty this
past April to serve in Iraq until July 2008 and will be leaving
September 5th, 2007.
Maryland ENA gives it full support to
the men and woman who are called to duty to serve their country. We
all wish them well and pray for their safe and speedy return.
We would also like to thank our servicemen and women for their
service to our country and to their families for their support and
sacrifices.
There is not a day that goes by that I
do not see an ED nurse give of himself or herself, sacrificing
family time to work an extra shift because the ED is so short
staffed or to give an extra smile when he or she thought they were
"tapped out" of smiles! Thank you for your service to our country
through the work you do in emergency nursing. Thank you for striving
to be the best ED nurse you can.
Our Maryland ENA is here to help you through continuing education
and providing a network of best clinical practice models. We hope
you will join us at our local and state meetings to help us keep our
association going strong.
Looking forward to seeing you!
Sincerely yours,
Tamra White, RN
President
Maryland Emergency Nurses Association
