Hylenex- For Subcutaneous Fluid Infusions
We have all had those
times in adults and children when we cannot access veins for isotonic fluid
infusion. Imagine if there was a way to run these infusions into the
patients via subcutaneous access. And so emerges Hylenex, a recombinant (hyaluronidase
human injection) that is used to temporarily reduce the collagen barrier in
the subcutaneous space thereby enhancing absorption of the fluids into the
vascular system.
Fluids infuse promptly
into the space by gravity or IV infusion pump. In children the fluids can be
infused at a rate up to 20 ml/kg/hr.
The preferred sites for
catheter access of the subcutaneous space are anterior and lateral aspects
of thighs and hips, upper abdominal wall, subclavicular region, subscapular
region, dorsal aspect of upper arm.
Once the IV catheter is
inserted into the subcutaneous space, 1 ml of hylenex is injected and then
IV fluids are attached and infused. What could be simpler?
Should an IV that you
have in the vein infiltrates, the same product can be injected via the IV
tubing to hasten the infiltration’s reabsorption at an alarmingly fast rate.
Cost is $85.00 per dose
which lasts for 24 hours !!!!
The uses and indications
for our patients is endless.

Thrombin-JMI Epistaxis Kit and Thrombi-Pad
Say “no problem” with
nose bleed patients with this system. It is a prefilled syringe with a soft
cone-shaped plug at the end that easily adapts to the inside of the nares.
Inject/spray the contents of the syringe into nasal passage and hemostasis
is achieved within 3 minutes in 72.4% of patients.
The same medication is
also available already impregnated into the Thrombi-pad. Simple and easily
quick to use for bleeding wounds.
BrainScope
A handheld non-invasive
tool that attaches to the patient via electrodes placed on the patient’s
forehead and scalp to provide immediate information to indentify brain
abnormalities i.e., stroke and concussion. It provides clinical analysis of
brain electrical activity within minutes. Currently it is for
investigational use only and is not currently available for sale in the U.S.

Zoll Cardiac Monitor- New Features
This biphasic monitor and defibrillator
uses a puck sized device placed on the patient’s mid sternum to verify if
compressions delivered are maintaining adequate perfusion. There is a visual
cue on the monitor screen that verifies this. The monitor can also
effectively show the underlying patient’s rhythm DURING compressions. The
hands free universal pads (for monitor, defib and pacing) are kept plugged
in to the machine and “ready to go”. The machine performs auto machine and
pad self testing on a daily basis and sends a daily email report to your
hospital designee for quality control records. When the monitor is turned
on, there is a visual green checkmark to indicate to the users that the
machine is in working order or a red “X” indicating the opposite. The
defibrillation mode adjusts current and resistance with impedence sensing to
customize the patient’s shock.
